I've been waiting for
this album for two years now, ever since this power pop/rock trio released their
first album -- "Transitions" -- in 2002; and it's been a very impatient wait,
I'm compelled to add!
Made up of Mitch Alden (electric & acoustic
guitars, and lead vocals), Neil Carroll (drums & percussion, and backing
vocals), and Dan Paul (bass and backing vocals), "NOW is NOW" brings hook-laden
melodies and thoughtful lyrics (all penned by Alden, by the way) and melds them
with gorgeous vocal harmonies into a sound and style that, well, if you happen
to be a big fan of the classic rock style of music, then this group is for you.
The first band that springs to mind as I listen to the nine songs that
make up "Days of SUmmer" is REO SPeedwagon in that Alden's voice is very similar
to that of Kevin Cronin's. This gives such songs as "Better Day," "Walk the
Line," "Days of SUmmer", and "Watch the World" an instantly recognizable nature
even when you are hearing them for the first time.
Alden is consistent
with his songwriting building finely crafted songs with each and every track,
wihile Carroll and Paul lay down rock-solid rhythmic foundations. This Portland,
ME-based trio has set a high bar for other local acts to match. Heck, make that
national acts, too!
